How to treat fatty liver disease?
The bad news is that fatty liver disease can’t be treated with medication, since that would only put more pressure on the liver. The good news is it can be treated with some changes in your dietary habits and even it can even be reversed. The best way to treat a fatty liver is trough gradual weight loss, some physical exercise and a healthy liver diet.
- Fatty Liver Diet: Eat plenty of fresh and unprocessed fruits and vegetables. Stay away from all types of fast foods and cook with olive oil or coconut oil.
- Weight Loss: Gradual weight loss is the best way to reduce the fat around the liver. Excessive weight loss can be dangerous and is not recommend.
- Exercise: If you’re not used to exercising, consult a doctor before you begin. Start slow and try to work your way up to 30 min a day. Exercise can be incorporated in your daily life.
- Alcohol: Avoid at all cost.
- Medication and drugs: Try to limit the use of medication or drugs. If you’re unsure if a certain type of medication is harmful to your liver, consult a doctor.
- Clean Air: Polluted air goes into your blood via your breath and skin, which in turn has to be detoxified by your liver. Stay away from places where there has been painted or any place the air has been polluted by chemicals.
What does a fatty liver diet consist of?
High fiber foods such as bran cereals, dried beans, brown rice, and fresh fruits and vegetables should be included in your fatty liver diet. Skinless chicken and turkey, fish, and lean beef are also excellent choices to include.
Some foods that should be avoided while on a fatty liver diet are any type of red meat, pork and bacon, canned vegetables, and processed or prepackaged foods, such as frozen dinners and potato chips.
Getting the right amount of protein for your body is also important to a successful fatty liver diet. Too much protein is not good for your body and can be hard for your liver to break down. Because protein is such a vital ingredient to proper body function, it is recommended that you check with your doctor or a registered nutritionist before restricting or changing your daily intake of protein.
Excessive amounts of vitamin A and D can be difficult for the liver to process and could cause further damage to an already stressed liver. Any type of vitamin supplements should be used with caution while on a fatty liver diet. This is especially true of mega-vitamin supplements. A note of caution – excessive amounts of vitamin A are extremely toxic to the liver. Once again, it is best to check with your physician before taking any types of vitamins or medications.
